The non-linear optical crystal lithium triborate (LBO) has been utilized extensively in a variety of optical devices, such as frequency doublers and triplers, optical parametric oscillators, and ultrafast lasers. The crystal is a desirable option for many applications due to its good transparency over a wide range of wavelengths, high laser-induced damage threshold, and relatively large non-linear coefficient.


  • Optical Properties

1) Broad transparency range from 160nm to 2600nm

2) High optical homogeneity (dn»10-6/cm) and being free of inclusion

3) Relatively large effective SHG coefficient (about three times that of KDP)

4) High damage threshold

5) Wide acceptance angle and small walk-off

6) Type I and type II non-critical phase matching (NCPM) in a wide wavelength range

7) Spectral NCPM near 1300nm


  • Applications

1) Double frequency:

• Nd:YAG lasers for medical and industrial purposes

• High power Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers for scientific research and military use

• Pumping of Nd:YVO4, Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers

• Ruby, Ti:Sappire and Cr:LiSAF lasers

2) Triple frequency:

• Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers

• Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA) and Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO)

• Frequency doubling and tripling of high power 1340nm Nd:YAP laser
